So due to some default configuration issues I wasn't aware of, the database for this forum had expanded to 4 gigs of data and 8 gigs of logs. The logs normally allow a database to be recovered if anything goes wrong, the amount of logs determines how far back you can go if something goes wrong. The combination of backup and log allow you to recover most/all of your data. Unfortunately the default setting says to track every transaction since the beginning of the forums, which meant the log was expanding to an unmanageable size.
I attempted to delete the log and set it to only track the last...X amount of transactions, then delete all the data that has nothing to do with dndorks and got it to 800MB. Unfortunately the database corrupted itself and a whole bunch of things went wrong. Normally I would have been able to restore from backup after I corrupted the database, but I hadn't been able to backup the database in months because of how big it was.
So I've been poking at it for days now and each change I make seems to improve the performance by a few percent, but its still not back up to full steam. The ultimate goal is to get it even faster than it was before.
Today the forums seem "very" snappy for me, how is it for everyone else? The only thing slow for me at the moment is making a new post...not sure why. What are things slow for you and I'll take a look and try to optimize the database accordingly.
The good news is with the database reasonable again I can make backups which means the site shouldn't spontaneously implode. ;)
