With an amazing crash, the fire engine blasts through the abandoned cars, but the impact is significant, and everyone inside is thrown around violently and Abe loses control.
Alex doesn't remember what happened, exactly, but he wakes on the ground several yards from the fire truck, seemingly uninjured. Behind him, the scattered cars burn low beneath the torrent of rain. Looking up from the puddle in which he lays, he can see the steeple of the church right in front of him as it stretches into the stormy sky. From inside the building comes a frightened shriek. It's Mary!
Abe and the others come to in the truck, dazed but uninjured, except for Dave, who remains alive but unconscious in the other seat. Abe checks the ignition, and the engine roars back to life. Apparently the crash wasn't that bad.

Making a quick check for a pulse I grab my axe and leap to the ground and run back to check on Alex. Seeing him moving I change directions and run to the front door of the church, axe at the ready, I kick the door open. (Assuming its closed but not locked and barricaded) "Anybo-bo-bo-..........Who's here?" I yell out.
) Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

Armed with axes, the two men charge into the church. Blood marks the pews, and several freshly killed bodies lie scattered about the room. Nothing moves and there is no sound other than the pounding of rain on the stained-glass windows and the low rumble of thunder. Then, another muffled scream from down the hall!
Running to the rescue, Abe and Alex come upon two zombies, one in a priest's smock and the other in a lab coat, clawing their way through a thin wooden door. Through a gap they can see Mary and the little girl that she clutches to her. Again she screams in terror!

Both men charge forward, almost in unison, bringing their axes down upon the unsuspecting zombies' skulls. In a frenzy of gore, their axe-falls bring the undead to the ground, their heads unrecognizable messes.
Inside the room, Mary and the little girl sob with relief from their terror, Mary's only intelligible word being "Alex".
Meanwhile, Abe scans the hall behind them for further dangers, but finds the church once again silent but for the tears of the innocent and the low roar of the storm. However, looking down, Abe sees a thin leather-bound book in the pocket of the zombie's lab coat. Partially visible on the cover, in gold foil, is the word "-ience".

Abe pulls out the book from the zombie's pocket, slowly revealing the full text of the title, "Aperture Science Research Log". From the stains along the page-side of the book, it looks like the books was bloodied at some point.

Abe With trembling fingers Abe carefully grabs the book by a corner and snatches it out of the pocket. The titel means nothing to him. Opening the book and scaning the pages it still means nothing to him. Disgusted he tosses it onto the body. Wiping my blade off on the lab coat I look around the church again then go outside to check on any activity nearby and to check on Dave. The trucks engine idling away is reassuring. Sure is a whole lot of truck to be handling compared to the Landrovers and jeeps I am accustomed to.

Alex rushes to Mary, who grabs him tightly, crying into his shoulder. "They're dead. They're all dead!", she says over and over, her voice muffled in Alex's jacket. Alex looks around to make certain the room is safe as the three remain huddled for several minutes, comforting one another. Soon, the little girl pulls away and looks about the room as Mary continues to cry. She steps toward the door, and before Alex can warn her to come back for her own safety, she turns to him and, pointing to the small book lying open on the floor, says quietly, "This book says they come from worms..."
