    Re: Inconvenient Death

    Abe

I check back door for damage and that the lock mechanism still works, open door briefly and check the back alley for signs of Zombies then close and lock door again.  Broom handle seemingly a permanent part of my left hand I take advantage of the respite to start sweeping the floor.  I need a normal activity to calm me down and it gives me an excuse to move around and surreptitiously check Alex for unusual behavior.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Abe checks the back door to make certain that everything is secure, and finding that it is.  Meanwhile, Hal peers into the growing dawn light, looking for a car that might get them away.  Unfortunately, the ones he can see are all wrecked, inaccessible and probably don't have keys.  Even if they could get one started, it wouldn't hold everybody.

Then he sees it.  Across the street, hidden behind the  doors of the garage and only just visible through a narrow window at the top, the siren of a fire engine slated for repair...

    Re: Inconvenient Death

As calmly as he can, Hal moves to Abe.
"Come with me. I think I found a ticket out of here."
Hw starts walking back to the window, stopping only to give Alex the same news in a whisper that only he can hear.

My interest is tweaked as it always is when somebody whispers, I glance over at the storekeeper and his shotgun and over at Alex who seems normal but who knows what he went through.  I follow Hal to find out what his ticket is.  Right now detention hall at good old PS 31 would look good compared to being stuck in this store surrounded by Zombies.  Funny how being an archaeologists assistant and I never even seen a mummy, working with bones of ancient peoples and never a whisper about evil spirits or ghosts and now I am in a nightmare of Zombies.  I really miss my sorting room at the University.

I hug Mary tightly. "Yes I'm fine...military? pick-up point? No, we've not heard about it. How far is that? Whats the military doing?

Noticing Abe poking me: "Don't worry, the dead heads didn't catch me...I might get infected from these but thats more becuse the dumpster wasn't exactly clean...

When Abe reaches the door window, Hal says,"Look at the firehouse across the street. It seems to me that there's a truck still inside. If we can get it working..."

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Well I'm no mechanic but I'll help you do whatever I can.  Maybe we can find something over there that would make better weapons, large screw drivers, axes, something.  Say when and I'll cover you with Mr. Broom here.

As Abe and Hal whisper to one another, Mary tells Alex, "I don't know.  I just heard from another couple that were on their way there.  The high school is across town, maybe a few hours on foot, but it's not like we can just walk there."  Mary wipes the tears from her eyes.  "I don't know what we're going to do now."

    Re: Inconvenient Death

OOCSorry, guys.  Busy week myself.  But here we go...

As the two men discuss the situation, there's a general shuffling and movement from the rest of the survivors.  The father of the little girl comes up to Hal and Abe and says, "Guys, we can't stay here anymore.  We're moving today."  Behind him, people are packing up food and other necessities.  "Alex showed that we can move along the rooftops.  It will be slow going, but I think we can work our way to the high school from there.  So start packing, and may God have mercy on us."

Mary looks at Alex with concern.  "Alex," she says, "We can't take a truck.  You saw what happened to me.  It'd never work.  But we are going.  A bunch of us have decided that we're going to work our way across the rooftops where the... things can't reach us.  It's the only way.

Looks at Hal, looks over at the truck, looks up at the rooftops.

"Uh my last time in field I walked over desert and climbed cliffs but that was 2 1/2 years ago.  I'm not really sure about jumping from roof to roof.  I'm not old but I'm not in the shape I was when I was in the field.  I think we would be better off in a large truck."

I look down at my broom and over at the shopkeeper with his shotgun and around the store.

"W,w,w,we really only have one real weapon here and I d,d,d,d,d,don't know how much ammo he has, d,d,don't you think we should at least give him a ch,chance to get the truck running and maybe pi,pi,pi,pick up something more substatntial to fight with in,in the shop?"
