    re: D&D Characters

no, seriously, he wants to play that charactor... every week he wants an even crazier one. When he told me about the half dragon ogre idea, I saked how in the hells that would happen it went a little like this-

"the ogre had his way with the female dragon (in human form) after raveging a small town"

"o yeah, drgons let themselves get raped by tiny (to them) UGLY beasts all the time... why wouldn't the dragon just go back to its natural form and step on the ogre???"

    "... ... ... ... ... still, dont you think this is a great character?"

    "no"

and to his 8 breed mix up there all i have to say is- ever heard of a chromosome count?

BTW Scott, can i get a copy of your stories, and John, the Dragoons from FF kick ass!

but, have you tried the dragoon charactor class on the wizards website... the dragoons are freakisly overpowered! they have like 40 new feats, and Sk8nfoo made one just to try one out and took on 10 orcs without being touched! without magic!

    LHAF (Laughs his Ass off)

*wiping the tears of laughter from his eye* I think I've USED that argument style before, but when pushing prestige classes and home-brew races more than character designs.

As for the WotC Dragoons, could you provide me with a link? I'm slow (eh?) and I can't do it by myself.

Gonna acctually finish posting my Dragoon Psychic warrior today...

Tell him to pick something sensible and stick with it, or find someone else to go harangue about playing these crazy things.

    re: D&D Characters

Newbie players aren't too hard to deal with, just take it slowly with them, walk them through making characters and run a couple sample combats to let them get an idea of how the system works in play. Then do a simple adventure.

    re: D&D Characters

I've noticed a lot of people have problems with D&D just by its reputation alone. "Oh, that's the game where Rangers can't climb trees.." or "Oh, that's the game that's all about killing stuff.." or "Oh, yes..the training wheels RPG.." or "Yeah, the game where bigass Dragons can survive in 30' by 60' rooms in the third level of some moldy old tomb when they'd never even be able to get down there in the first place!" These kinds of things are easily debunked. But a lot of people can't get past two key things about D&D:

1)D&D is not a very realistic system. Granted, for me that's half the fun, because it's not bogged down by a lot of the rules which more realistic games have, and doesn't try to simulate real life outside more than a token attempt, which helps in the escapism. But for people who are used to it taking a few game rounds to reload a crossbow, or armor reducing damage instead of keeping you from getting hit/hurt, or being able to kill someone by shooting them in the eye when they want to, this gets very frustrating. This leads right into the other key thing about D&D which is much of the reason why D&D isn't very realistic, to wit:

2)D&D always has been and always will be, at its heart, a jumped-up fancy wargame. Once again, for me this is a good deal of the fun, because it lets you concentrate more on having fun adventuring and not sweating so much about getting your sword arm lopped off or other such things, and lets you play a more free-form attitude with your character's personality. But for some people, not being able to strictly define their char's personality in exacting detail in game terms makes it seem like it's not a "real" RPG.

Well, D&D just isn't for everyone. But if you can get people to hump it past those two major points, then you stand a pretty good chance of getting them to play and enjoy themselves, cos that's the point, after all.

    re: D&D Characters

you see, in the dmg about page 20 or so it telles you what to add to your challage rating for not having a human as the base creature. it adds like 4 i think. this means that eveything added together is the same as a 13th level character.

cant sleep the clowns will eat me...

    re: D&D Characters

That's for NPC's only. For PC's you have to determine the creature's ECL.
