It doesn't matter, we'll get out of here. We have a working truck, but we have to go. Its large, we'll be safe.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Arriving back at the fire engine, everyone seems to be ok.  Even Dave has woken up and seems to be doing well.

"Well, hell!  Welcome back little ladies!" Stew bellows.  "It's nice to have something better than these ugly mugs to look at on this trip.  Well, don't be shy!  Climb on in!  We're almost there!"

The ladies climb into the vehicle, the men inside doing their best to make them comfortable and safe.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

    Abe

Not trusting the quiet after all the frenetic activity I decide to follow my gut and run back into the church and climb the steeple for a good look around, both back the way ewe came and the direction of our destination looking for any unusual movement or more barricades like the one we just crashed through.  If we need a detour I would rather know about it before I get back behind the wheel.

"Back in 3 minutes." I yell to Dave and run back into the church, I start opening doors looking for the stairs up.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Abe informs the others and rushes of into the church once more.  Quickly and carefully throwing open doors, he soon finds his way to the steeple tower and runs up the narrow spiral staircase.  Inside is a dead man, one from the convenience store.  What was his name?  Eric, maybe?

Through the large open window, Abe can see the streets and buildings spread out before him, and that there is indeed another roadblock (several cars, a burned-out bus and a downed telephone pole) ahead, and he maps out an alternate route in his head.  But he also notices something else.  Something's wrong with the storm.  It swirls in one place overhead, like a tornado, though there's very little wind in the city.  Also,  even when there's no lightning, a strange green glow emanates from somewhere in the storm's center.

The howling in the streets begins again, and the church walls begin to shake.  The steeple begins to sway ominously...

    Abe

Frightened so bad my legs hardly hold me up I stumble back downstairs and make another quick sweep of the church.  Not exactly sure why since I never belonged to a church I grab a box of candles, a bible, a hymnal and the book on the ground that I pulled from the Zombies pocket.  After A brief look around from the church steps I make a mad dash to the truck and fling myself into the drivers seat.  I try to explain what I saw but I couldn't get past my stuttering.

I toss the 3 books and box on the big dashboard and grab the clipboard off the console.  Turning the pad of log book sheets around I write a brief but thorough report of my findings and hand it to Dave to read and pass around.  More carefully than I did from the garage I ease into 2nd gear and let out the clutch for a smooth start and make my turn onto the alternate route.  Slowly I make my way through the streets being careful to note the landmarks I had marked out in my head.  I wish the old professor was here, maybe he could explain what was going on because I don't have a clue.

Soon, the high school appears in the dark before the survivors, surrounded by reinforced fencing topped with barbed-wire.  As they approach, they can see several men with rifles above the gate taking aim at the fire engine.

    "Aw Geezee Katoozie!"

I stop the truck and I search frantically on the panel over the windshield for anything that might prove I'm not a truck full of Zombies.  I turn on the spotlight and shine it straight up, then the light bar.  On the steering column I find the switch for the headlight flashers and turn them on.  I'm hoping this is enough unlike typical zombie behavior they will point their rifles somewhere else.  I roll down the window and lean out with both of my hands showing.  I seen that in a TV show once.  I hope its something I'm supposed to do and not just something the movie people do.

I'm here just busy. Alex is going to look for places to slip off into the city and hide until the bite kills him.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Suddenly the gates fly open and the survivors are ushered off of the truck by armed men, leaving the fire engine behind.  Suddenly, Mary panics.

"Alex!  Where's Alex!?" she screams.  She struggles against the soldiers and escapes them, running out into the night!

Meanwhile, the soldiers continue to herd Abe and the rest into the compound.  The sound of a helicopter's blades spinning up can be heard somewhere nearby.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

I freeze in my tracks and refuse to go any further till I can speak to a sergeant or an officer.  If one is available I will plead with him to find Mary and Alex.  I also explain they should empty the truck, I have supplies they may be able to use stashed in the side compartments and the center runway inside the truck.

"You must find Alex, if it wasn't for him we wouldn't have been able to get here. And the truck, I can see why you want to leave it outside the compound but it has a lot of supplies, mostly mechanical stuff you guys might be able to use to maintain your gear.  Oh yeah I left some books on the dashboard I would like very much to have and my axe.  Its gotten us through a pretty rough time and I would rather leave my pants behind than my axe."

OOCCan I see Alex to point him out to the soldiers?

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Some of the soldiers check out the contents of the truck, but the rest force Abe and the others into the compound.  Alex is nowhere to be seen...

The whirr of the helicopter is deafening.  The soldiers don't say much as they load the group into the vehicle.  Suddenly, Dave doesn't look so good.  The sounds he's making can't be heard over the helicopter's take-off, but when he looks up, his eyes are solid black, like the zombies.  Suddenly he lurches forward, knocking a soldier out of the bay door to plummet to his death on the pavement far below as he claws and bites at the pilot.  Klaxons sound, and the helicpter begins to spin out of control!

Meanwhile, in a dark alley a distance away, Mary find Alex.  His breath is ragged and he's hunched over, moaning oddly.  "A...Alex?  Are you alright?" she asks as she slowly approaches him, her delicate hand outstretched to lend comfrot.  Her hand moves closer.... and closer...

I am sick but no longer surprised at the deflection of Dave to the darkside.  I don't have the slightest idea how you get infected but I have been pretty much wading in Zombie gore all day.  Right now I have more current priorites like a helicopter moving out of control.  I have been part of air searches at and around sites from small helicopters and nothing like this has ever happened.  All I can do is hang on and hope that I don't mess my pants, I don't want to die with messy pants.  Momma told me I should have stayed with the carnival. A headliner she said, I could have been a headliner.  I wonder who is going to write the headline about this crash or would it even get put into a report.

    Re: Inconvenient Death

"Alex?" Mary asks again.  With a spasmodic jerk, Alex's head whips up, his eyes as black as night, with a low moan growling in his throat.  Somewhere nearby, there is the sound of an explosion, and Mary screams!

The wreckage of a helicopter, a body lies impaled and bleeding nearby.  In the foreground, a leather-bound journal is open, the pages flipping in the breeze.  A green glow from overhead permeates everything.

"...what have we done?  Dear god, please forgive us our pride.  We sought doors to other worlds, without thought that those doors might be placed there for a reason.  Alien virus?  Magical curse?  Hubris unleashed?  Whatever it is that we have done to your works, I apologize, and beg your forgiveness and love."

"Or was this your plan all along?  Apocalypse?  Judgement Day?  The rise of the dead from their graves?  Are my prayers just a joke?  I guess I'll find out soon enough.  I'm pretty sure the bite wound is fatal, and yet I'm not dead.  I wonder if the zombie trapped in the tower will hear my confession?  Will he want to eat of my flesh?  Ha!"

"I'm sorry Diane.  I love you."

    "Adam"

In the background, blurry, the limp body begins to stir.  Then behind it, another.  Soon, several shuffling forms move about in the green-lit wreckage, accompanied by a keening moan...

    Re: Inconvenient Death

Well, that's that.  Thanks, everybody, for your participation.  I hope that I wasn't too heavy-handed.  It's hard to get a read on the players when you're not in their presence.  And miscommunications are bound to happen as well.  And sometimes you can't spend the amount of time you want on a scene because it holds things up.  I do appreciate your patience and creativity.  I think in the end, with your help, we created something pretty interesting here.  At least we were able to finish before all of the players left. Ethan Wink

Feel free to offer any comments.  I'm always curious how things went and what might have been better. Ethan Smile
