Great idea of Ethan's to profit on the unknowing.

This seems more Chaotic neutral than Chaotic evil; personal gain rather than the outright evil.

I disagree. I consider this an evil act. I cannot see how self-enrichment is anything but Evil. Perhaps rather minor evil, given that Paladins consistently do acts for self-enrichment, but I can't really place selfishness as Chaotic.

Leave it to Ethan to use the end of the world as an oppurtunity to scam people.

No one considered that Ethan is derailing M.U.N.C.H.K.I.N.'s evil plans by making sure rituals fail by the use of improper components? The fact he profits off of it is a side issue ;)

And no, Rich, my interpretation of this comic is that they're selling this stuff, not using it. Plus, if it was Ethan's idea in the first place, I don't see what it has to do with their evil plans. Maybe that's just me.

The fact that ethan is evil doesn't mean his every act has to be evil as well. If you mostly behave neutral, but do a few evil things, you'll eventually slide into evil unless you do some good to balance it out.

The act itself is fairly chaotic neutral. He's not hurting anyone (passing off hemlock as parsley would probably be evil since it might hurt someone using it in their cooking), nor is he particularly active in his deception, he's just using the fact that people are stupid. It doesn't change his alignment though. He's still chaotic stupid.

D'oh, how stupid of me. I overlooked the fact that this is a victimless crime. Chaotic then it is.

Anyways, it is well within his alignment. Alignment is really more of a guideline than a code of ethics, anyways. ^_^

Heck, the other night at the table, my TN swashbuckler disarmed an evil guy in combat, he surrendered. My good aligned party wanted to kill him or knock him out or make him walk in front because they hated all the things he had done. I forced them to put him in the middle, hands bound, because he surrendered and I respect that.

So a CE (which is a big assumption) character making profit off of people NOT dying... isnt a bad thing.

Didn't he quote the PHB about Chaotic Evil before doing something at MUNCHKING, thereby showing that he chooses CE as an alignment?

Choosing does not mean being.
